Comparing Brass and Copper

Brass and copper are two of the most common metals used for plumbing fittings because of their durability and value. As they're somewhat similar in nature, people also frequently have trouble deciding between the two for their fittings. So, it's good to have some understanding of their characteristics.

Both offer excellent corrosion resistance, although brass will corrode when used with salt water. Brass usually has small amounts of aluminum, tin, copper, zinc, while copper has few impurities. Visually, brass has a brighter golden appearance while copper has a reddish-brown look.

Industrial applications will choose brass over copper for a few different reasons. First, brass is stronger than copper, so it can withstand higher PSI pressure levels. Second, brass is a soft metal despite its strength, so it adapts to the pipe or other fitting inserted into it to create tight, secure connections. Lastly, brass has a much wider temperature range versus copper. Brass can be used from about -65° Fahrenheit to 250° Fahrenheit, while copper is restricted to about 32° Fahrenheit to 200° Fahrenheit.
