Prevent Excessive Pressure with an Expansion Tank

Expansion tanks – sometimes also referred to as thermal expansion tanks or water heater expansion tanks – are small overflow tanks that are connected to your water heating system. As water heats up, it expands in volume. Running directly from a water heater tank, these accommodate water expansion during the heating process.

The increase in pressure inside of the water heating system can cause damage to plumbing, valves, pumps, or the water heater itself if it isn’t relieved. In the past, water expansion during heating would be drained back into water supply. However, backflow regulations have lead to the increased use of check valves and similar devices. These devices bleed the water into waste. Expansion tanks, meanwhile, keep the water in the closed loop system, reducing waste while keeping the water from being pushed back into the public water system. Keep your water system equipment from unnecessary stress and a shortened life span with an expansion tank!
